About Illegal Migrant

Displacement, belonging and the emotional consequences of uncertainty

Illegal Migrant was released during Carlos Simpson’s self-directed My 2020 Lockdown Project and became his first studio album.

The album uses migration as both a social reality and an emotional framework through which to examine solitude, displacement, vulnerability, alienation and the search for belonging.

Its tracks move between personal introspection and wider social questions. Some songs focus directly on marginalisation, justice and exclusion, while others examine emotional memory, inner conflict, relationships, self-determination and hope.

The result is a record concerned not only with movement between places, but with what happens psychologically when certainty, home, recognition and identity become unstable.

The album asks what remains of identity when home, certainty and belonging can no longer be taken for granted.
02

Meaning & artistic background

A record about movement — physical, emotional and psychological

The title track places migration, exclusion and the desire for another chance at the centre of the record.

Elsewhere, songs such as Emotional Hangover, Uncertainty, Secret Voices and Smells Like Spirits turn inward, examining emotional exhaustion, mental conflict, loneliness and the difficulty of finding clarity.

Structural Conflict and Imagine a World broaden the album’s scope into social justice, systemic barriers, equality and the possibility of a more compassionate society.

The album repeatedly moves between those two scales: the individual trying to understand their own experience and the wider systems within which that experience takes place.

Emotional Hangover

Emotional exhaustion, empathy and the residue left by intense experience.

Meaning & data

Meaning & background

Emotional Hangover

Emotional Hangover examines what remains after an intense emotional experience has passed.

The song moves through empathy, exhaustion and disillusionment, recognising the pain carried by another person while also revealing the difficulty of sustaining connection when both people are emotionally depleted.

Rain becomes a metaphor for sadness and uncertainty, while the search for another explanation or another story reflects a desire for authenticity in circumstances that feel difficult to understand.

Uncertainty

Time, memory and the permanent presence of uncertainty.

Meaning & data

Meaning & background

Uncertainty

Uncertainty reflects on the relationship between what can be known and what remains unresolved.

Time continues to move, yet memories and unanswered questions remain. The song juxtaposes certainty with ambiguity and suggests that support from another person can become especially important when circumstances cannot be controlled.

Its repetition mirrors the persistence of uncertainty itself: something that changes form but never entirely disappears.

Trust, gratitude, release and emotional interdependence.

Meaning & data

Meaning & background

Word of Honour

Word of Honour explores emotional release and the trust that develops between two people when support has endured through difficulty.

The repeated language of letting go creates a meditative quality, suggesting that releasing anxiety can make genuine presence and connection possible.

The song also carries a strong sense of gratitude. Its title suggests a promise or commitment built around reliability, memory and appreciation.

Move Yourself

Personal agency, resilience and the necessity of forward movement.

Meaning & data

Meaning & background

Move Yourself

Move Yourself is built around personal agency. It encourages listeners to reject negative self-perceptions and recognise that individual choices contribute to the direction of their lives.

The repeated command to move functions literally and metaphorically: action becomes the means by which stagnation, fear and self-imposed limitations can be challenged.

The song also connects perseverance with work and responsibility, arguing that progress requires sustained effort rather than passive hope.

Illegal Migrant

Displacement, exclusion and the human need to be seen, heard and recognised.

Meaning & video

Meaning & background

Illegal Migrant

The title track focuses on loneliness, marginalisation and the experience of being treated as though one’s existence does not matter.

The narrator repeatedly asks for another opportunity — another life, another chance, another day — while confronting the indifference of a world in which “nobody wants to know”.

Images of being stranded and mentally lost reinforce the sense of displacement. Within the wider album, the song connects that personal isolation to the experience of people who leave their homes in search of safety or possibility and then encounter alienation and rejection.

At its centre is a universal demand: to be acknowledged as a human being deserving recognition, connection and hope.

Secret Voices

Reason, emotion and the hidden internal voices shaping perception.

Meaning & data

Meaning & background

Secret Voices

Secret Voices explores the internal dialogue between reason, emotion and subconscious thought.

The search for a hidden voice of reason becomes a metaphor for the difficulty of achieving clarity when competing thoughts are operating simultaneously.

References to angels introduce another layer of duality: guidance and idealism exist beside confusion and internal conflict.

The song ultimately presents consciousness as a contested space in which certainty must be actively sought.

Smells Like Spirits

Loneliness, imagined companionship and the uncertain line between reality and psychological refuge.

Meaning & data

Meaning & background

Smells Like Spirits

Smells Like Spirits examines loneliness through a protagonist who creates companionship within the mind.

The apparent triumph over isolation gradually becomes more ambiguous when the new friends are revealed to exist only in imagination.

That tension between happiness and unreality gives the song its psychological complexity. It asks whether imagined connection can meaningfully relieve loneliness and how the mind constructs refuge when real human contact is absent.

Following the Sun

Self-acceptance, letting go and moving towards inner peace.

Meaning & data

Meaning & background

Following the Sun

Following the Sun encourages the release of emotional burdens and the pursuit of a more peaceful relationship with life.

Its repeated references to time emphasise that life is finite and that energy spent on hatred, unnecessary pain or constant mental struggle can prevent a person from inhabiting the present.

The sun becomes an image of direction, warmth and clarity: following it symbolises moving towards acceptance rather than continuing to resist the flow of experience.

Anima

Longing, separation and the enduring desire for emotional connection.

Meaning & data

Meaning & background

Anima

Anima examines longing for someone who feels emotionally or physically distant.

The recurring search for an absent “angel” expresses the desire for closeness, while the difficulty of making communication work reveals the strain that separation places on relationships.

Memory and time remain present throughout the song, but so does commitment. The result is a track about both the pain of distance and the persistence of attachment.

Structural Conflict

Justice, freedom and the struggle to create change within resistant social systems.

Meaning & data

Meaning & background

Structural Conflict

Structural Conflict examines the tension between individual aspiration and the systems that constrain social change.

Its hypothetical statements contrast what the world could be with existing conditions, creating a critique of structures that limit freedom, justice and collective progress.

References to redemption, freedom and “no justice, no peace” place the song explicitly within a language of social and political transformation.

Although the track expresses frustration with repetitive cycles of resistance and disappointment, it retains an underlying call to use limited human time in pursuit of meaningful change.

Perfect Pretenders

Emotional masks, illusion and the distance between appearance and authenticity.

Meaning & data

Meaning & background

Perfect Pretenders

Perfect Pretenders explores the human tendency to construct facades around vulnerability.

Images of broken beauty, unsent communication and staged relationships create a world in which appearance does not necessarily correspond with emotional truth.

The title captures the central contradiction: people can become highly skilled at presenting identities and relationships that conceal unresolved pain.

Yet the song also suggests that something genuine remains beneath those performances — a desire for connection that the illusion cannot completely erase.

Imagine a World

Love, equality and a vision of human connection beyond social division.

Meaning & data

Meaning & background

Imagine a World

Imagine a World proposes a society in which love and mutual recognition replace prejudice, hatred and material division.

Its idea of “One Soul” presents humanity as fundamentally connected beneath distinctions of race, colour and social status.

The song functions both as an idealistic vision and as an invitation to action: imagining a more compassionate world is only meaningful if people also work towards creating it.

Loop

Love, regret and emotional patterns that continue despite the passage of time.

Meaning & data

Meaning & background

Loop

Loop uses repetition to mirror the emotional cycle of a damaged relationship.

Affection, anger, apology and longing repeatedly return while time continues to move forward.

The structure reinforces the central idea that emotional patterns can persist even when circumstances have changed. Regret therefore becomes its own loop: revisiting what was said, what was lost and what might have happened differently.

Silence

Introspection, inner clarity and freedom through stillness.

Meaning & data

Meaning & background

Silence

Silence presents stillness as a means of self-discovery rather than absence.

The listener is encouraged to attend to the inner voice and allow reason, rather than external noise, to provide direction.

Repeated appeals to free the soul suggest that silence can create psychological and spiritual space in which clarity becomes possible.

The song eventually expands that individual experience into a collective one, linking inner understanding with a wider sense of connection and possibility.

O Homem Do Leme

Disillusionment, loneliness and reflection on a life that has lost direction.

Meaning & data

Meaning & background

O Homem Do Leme

O Homem Do Leme closes the documented track sequence with a portrait of a person confronting personal decline, disillusionment and emotional isolation.

The protagonist looks backwards towards relationships, friendships, homeland and a previous sense of vitality while questioning the direction of the present.

The song therefore brings together themes that recur throughout Illegal Migrant: displacement, memory, loneliness and the difficulty of retaining a stable sense of identity when the structures that once provided meaning have fallen away.
