ATMO
Carlos Simpson
ATMO is the sixth studio album by Carlos Simpson, released on 15 December 2022. The album combines atmospheric sound, electronic experimentation, introspection and spiritual references while exploring human emotion, resilience, identity and transformation.
About ATMO
Sound, memory and the experience of becoming
ATMO moves between atmospheric soundscapes, electronic experimentation, voice, repetition and contemplative references.
Across its fourteen original tracks, the album engages with questions of memory, resilience, uncertainty, identity, spirituality, vulnerability and renewal.
Rather than presenting these themes as fixed answers, ATMO uses sound as a space for reflection — allowing stillness, urgency, rupture and transformation to coexist within the same body of work.

Meiosis Mitosis
Biological division becomes a conceptual starting point for
difference, continuity and transformation.
Meaning & data
Meiosis Mitosis
Biological division becomes a conceptual starting point for difference, continuity and transformation.
Meaning & background
Meiosis Mitosis
The title brings together two different biological processes of cell division.
Mitosis produces genetically identical daughter cells and is associated with growth, repair and continuity. Meiosis reduces chromosome number and creates genetically distinct cells, introducing variation through biological reproduction.
Placed within ATMO, the contrast between replication and variation establishes a conceptual relationship between continuity and difference: how something can emerge from what already exists while becoming something distinct.

Be Still
Stillness, displacement, memory and the search for inner
orientation.
Meaning & data
Be Still
Stillness, displacement, memory and the search for inner orientation.
Meaning & background
Be Still
Be Still is a reflective and introspective song exploring self-discovery, perseverance and the struggle for inner peace amid uncertainty.
The recurring phrase “Be still” functions as both a directive and a mantra. Stillness is not presented as inaction, but as a deliberate pause — a space in which the listener can reconnect with inner direction and aspiration.
The reference to “defining yourself in another land” introduces displacement and the experience of trying to establish identity in unfamiliar surroundings.
The instruction to “build the bridge from your memory” places memory at the centre of this process. The past becomes material through which the present can be understood and a future constructed.
Within ATMO, the song becomes a call towards resilience, reflection and personal agency.
03
Elisa
Loneliness, wandering, vulnerability and the search for
connection.
Meaning & data
Elisa
Loneliness, wandering, vulnerability and the search for connection.
Meaning & background
Elisa
Elisa reflects on loneliness, wandering and the search for connection through both physical and emotional movement.
Closed doors and windows create an image of a world that feels inaccessible, while the narrator's movement between Porto and Lisbon reinforces a sense of rootlessness and uncertainty.
The repeated invocation of “woman” introduces longing, companionship and emotional vulnerability. The song places physical hardship alongside the emotional experience of feeling unseen or disconnected.
Despite this instability, hope remains present through the desire for connection and the possibility that wandering may eventually lead somewhere meaningful.
04
RUN
Memory, vulnerability and the impulse to escape unresolved
experience.
Meaning & data
RUN
Memory, vulnerability and the impulse to escape unresolved experience.
Meaning & background
RUN
RUN explores inner turmoil through the metaphor of running from the past.
The repeated word “RUN” creates a sense of urgency, suggesting continual motion as an attempt to escape memories and emotional experiences that refuse to disappear.
The image of a “child underneath my skin” introduces vulnerability and the persistence of an earlier self beneath the accumulated experiences of adulthood.
The song ultimately describes the tension between confronting the past and attempting to outrun it.
05
Stand Up Straight
Resilience, dignity, personal freedom and the protection of
human agency.
Meaning & data
Stand Up Straight
Resilience, dignity, personal freedom and the protection of human agency.
Meaning & background
Stand Up Straight
Stand Up Straight is an empowering song about resilience, determination and the importance of continuing to fight for one's aspirations and rights.
The title functions both literally and metaphorically. To “stand up straight” is to retain dignity and strength when confronted by difficulty rather than allowing temporary circumstances to define the whole of one's life.
The repeated ideas of freedom and resisting external control place personal autonomy at the centre of the song. Statements such as “What you got is your freedom” and “Don't let them take you over” reinforce the importance of protecting one's agency and self-worth.
The phrase “It's just a moment” introduces a temporal perspective: adversity may be intense, but it does not necessarily represent permanence.

The Great Reset
A meditation on rupture, memory and renewal.
Meaning & data
The Great Reset
A meditation on rupture, memory and renewal.
Meaning & background
The Great Reset
The Great Reset is a meditation on rupture, memory and renewal.
Built through improvisation and experimentation, the track moves through uncertainty as a space of transformation, where fragments of the past remain present but something new begins to take form.
Rather than erasing what came before, the song asks what it means to begin again while carrying memory with us.

Bind Surrender
Happiness, self-worth, emotional withdrawal and surrender.
Meaning & data
Bind Surrender
Happiness, self-worth, emotional withdrawal and surrender.
Meaning & background
Bind Surrender
The song explores happiness, self-worth and the consequences of feeling unappreciated.
The recurring aspiration simply “to be happy” is placed against emotional neglect and the experience of becoming withdrawn or distant when recognition and connection are absent.
The idea of surrender describes a point at which survival can begin to replace fuller participation in life, relationships and emotional connection.
The song therefore asks the listener to consider the value of mutual recognition, self-worth and the personal cost of giving up on those needs.

Renascence
Love, disappointment, loss and the possibility of renewal.
Meaning & data
Renascence
Love, disappointment, loss and the possibility of renewal.
Meaning & background
Renascence
Renascence explores love, loss and the yearning for reconciliation.
Its title — meaning rebirth or revival — sits in tension with lyrics concerned with disappointment, betrayal and emotional absence.
Images of walking through rain and searching for a lost love frame the song as a journey through sadness and unresolved expectation.
The recognition of broken promises creates the emotional rupture at the centre of the song, while the title itself leaves open the possibility that confronting disappointment may eventually produce renewal.
12
Sometimes
Consumerism, social ritual and the emotional contradictions
beneath celebration.
Meaning & data
Sometimes
Consumerism, social ritual and the emotional contradictions beneath celebration.
Meaning & background
Sometimes
Sometimes offers a critique of consumerism and the rituals that can dominate the holiday period.
The song contrasts public expectations of celebration with feelings of loneliness, confusion and financial or emotional pressure.
Its commentary questions whether culturally enforced celebration can become disconnected from genuine wellbeing when consumption, overspending and excess replace meaning.
The song invites reflection on the difference between performed happiness and a more authentic relationship with celebration, community and personal experience.
13
Resurrection
Creation, existence, mortality, spirituality and rebirth.
Meaning & data
Resurrection
Creation, existence, mortality, spirituality and rebirth.
Meaning & background
Resurrection
Resurrection explores creation, existence and the cycles of life and death.
The song draws upon the interpretation of G.O.D. as Generator, Operator and Destroyer, connecting creation, continuation and ending within a single conceptual structure.
Its orchestral and choral language draws upon associations between classical music, spirituality and the church.
The composition asks whether divine existence depends upon human recognition or whether it transcends physical existence altogether.
The movement from emptiness towards a larger climax gives the work a trajectory from desolation towards rebirth.
