Carlos Simpson at Digital Leaders AI Week 2026

Carlos Simpson will speak at Digital Leaders AI Week 2026 on 22 October 2026, examining why human agency, identity, judgement and decision capability matter more than ever as artificial intelligence becomes increasingly embedded in professional and organisational life.

What happens to human agency as AI becomes more capable?

Artificial intelligence is changing how people generate information, develop ideas, evaluate possibilities and make decisions. As these systems become more capable, the question is no longer only what AI can do, but what people need to remain capable of doing for themselves.

At Digital Leaders AI Week 2026, Carlos Simpson will examine this question through the relationship between identity, judgement, decision capability and human agency.

His contribution considers why these human capabilities become more significant, rather than less significant, when technology can increasingly generate, recommend, predict and automate.

Human Agency in the Age of Artificial Intelligence: Why Identity, Judgement and Decision Capability Matter More Than Ever

Capability is not the same as agency

AI can extend human capability by accelerating analysis, generation and access to information. But technological capability and human agency are not the same thing.

Human agency involves the capacity to interpret circumstances, exercise judgement, make decisions, act and remain responsible for those actions. These processes are connected to how people understand themselves, their relationship with others and the contexts in which they participate.

The more capable AI becomes at producing plausible answers and recommendations, the more important it becomes to understand how people develop the judgement required to question, evaluate, accept or reject what those systems produce.

A wider inquiry into human becoming in the age of AI

The AI Week contribution connects with Carlos Simpson's wider practitioner-research into the relationship between artificial intelligence and human development, with particular attention to identity, judgement, agency, decision-making and responsible participation.

His work brings together perspectives from strategic design, executive mentoring, creative practice and human development to examine how people retain authorship and responsibility within increasingly AI-mediated environments.

This inquiry also informs work developed through BE(YOU)FULL , where identity, awareness and agency are examined as interconnected dimensions of human development.

Applying the inquiry across professional practice

Questions of agency and judgement extend across Carlos Simpson's professional work. In strategic design, they concern authorship and creative decision-making. In mentoring and leadership, they concern reflection, responsibility and the quality of human decisions. In human development, they concern how people develop the capacity to participate meaningfully in changing environments.

What should remain distinctly human?

As artificial intelligence becomes more capable, the central question may not be how closely machines can reproduce human outputs, but how deliberately people continue to develop the capacities required to exercise judgement, make decisions and take responsibility for what follows.
