After spending the year 2019/2020 capturing the views, feelings, and hopes of people of all ages and diverse cultures living through challenging times of the COVID-19 lockdown including myself I’ve decided to express my thoughts and feelings through something new. So, I challenged my usual way of thinking as well as the creative process (“in the moment”) improvising music with the aim to create freely and spontaneously. Because of my lack of experience in music, it was a fun and interesting process to learn at the same time as making. As a result, four albums arose: Love Is The Secret, Illegal Migrant, Tribal Soul, and Memórias do Vento. All of them were released at the end of the year 2020 around Christmas time. All the images in this book were painted also during the COVID-19 lockdown with a specific medium and technique as part of the “My 2020 Lockdown project”.

Imagine a world without identity, and what my mind would do trying to wrap itself around the concept of someone trying to sell me the idea of identity. I don’t mean lacking the ability to distinguish ourselves from other entities as separate individuals, I mean the idea of knowing who other people *are*. To relate this to Open, let’s step back a moment from the idea of accounts *at all thinks of the internet as just one giant bulletin board, where anyone can leave notes anywhere. you’ve articulated the question well, but then you’ve dropped it, and fallen back to discussing the identity of blog posters again. Identity in a world of physical people you have met, people can talk to in person, is a kind of baseline. Knowing “who someone is” in such a context means knowing what they look like, how they talk, what they believe, where they live, and what they do for a living. In theory, one might be acquainted with a person in that kind of way, and still be deceived about their identity; for example, they might be a secret mole, operating under deep cover for a foreign power. But for personal acquaintance still seems to be the best kind of identity you could ask for. The second kind of “identity” has developed, whereby one knows one token. Originally this was one’s mark or signature; appended to a handwritten letter (or to some other sample of one’s handwriting) it was a fair indication that the signed content was one’s own work, or at least that one assented to its meaning.

SIGNS OF FINGERPRINTS & The Art of Handwriting - Book by Carlos Simpson
- I made this sketchbook in 2011 and I kept it on my shelf until 2020. The reason I did not publish it before is that I didn’t consider it finished. This sketchbook is a collection of some of my ideas and reading on western typography. I use this revision study to better understand the importance of typography as an identity tool to bookmark a reference in human evolution which I intend to publish in another edition of this publication shortly. All the images are original and carefully selected fonts to represent the Western Alphabet in a way that the difference can be analyzed between fonts so that when you scan through the pages you are aware of the element variation from font to font and every mark can express different messages and feelings. These handwriting line drawings used mostly raw materials to represent fingerprints to emphasize the idea of identity. With this study, I’m not only trying to understand the relationship between typography and identity but also creating a manual that anyone interested in typography and handwriting can use as a reference. At the time, this book served as a support during and after my graduation from The University of West of England in Graphic Design.
I intentionally made it as fun as possible but at the same time with a certain degree of seriousness. Besides, I never intended to take this discipline as something serious and boring.
